So it was Mother's Day
and I decided to organise a small party for my mother, after all we get too
busy sometimes to remember to celebrate this wonderful women in our lives. So
on days like this, I always like to make my mother feel a lot more special and
of course the envy of other women. My mother is a Catholic, I was raised a
Catholic, but I had to find my faith myself, so I moved on. Anyway, she went to
church that Sunday, everyone came for their mothers and I'm sure she must have
felt terrible when they called out the children to bless their mothers and I
was a no show. I'm sure she was never gonna forgive me for that.
Well, it was later in
the evening I went to see her, and with me, I brought gifts, wrappers, and a
big fat envelope (mothers always love the money part). Hahahahaha... Then came
the canopy and chairs, different kind of delicacies, music and of course some
of my crazy friends. You didn't need to invite the villagers before the all
started trooping in. That evening, the highlight of the occasion was me
introducing Adesuwa as my wife to be. Na so my mil'e dance dance dance soté leg
begin pain her. She couldn't believe that her "Kas-no-va" son has
finally brought home a girl, one she could see, one who was now sitting on her
lap. Later that evening after the party, Adesuwa offered to help her sweep the
compound, but mama wouldn't let her saying she should save her energy for the eight
children, eight grandchildren she will give her. We both laughed because
Adesuwa wants 4 children, I want just two, but mama want all our numbers plus
more. And that was indeed funny.
The following day just
before we left, mil'e sat us down and began investigating. When did we meet?
How long has the relationship been? What do we fancy about each other? Marriage
is not a game of chance, she said, once the choice has been made, whatever the
outcome you know you would both have to work it out. She turned to Adesuwa who
was now a bit uncomfortable. My daughter she said, Osato is my son, I know he
has his own flaws, I also know that he is very stubborn; please don't let him
go, whenever he does anything wrong, forgive him, love him, respect him, be his
partner, be his best friend. He has never brought any woman to me, you are the
first, now he has decided to be serious with you and to commit to only you,
please my daughter, do not disappoint me, I mean US.
She sent Adesuwa to
get her Bible in the room and as she left to get it, she turned to me and asked
so when we dey go see her parents? How soon is the wedding? Ha! Mil'e, take am
easy. I'll tell you when it's time. She came back to say she couldn’t find it
and Mama said it was alright. Mama walked us to the car, hugged Adesuwa tightly
and gave me the look (every mother has one). I watched her through the rare view mirror
dancing as we drove away, her image became smaller and smaller and ultimately
disappeared.
And so my greatest
gift to my mother for the celebration of Mother's Day was Adesuwa.
